I’m writing this on Sunday morning, sitting on the couch with a blanket crocheted by my late Grandmother, Nanny, covering my legs and feet. Steven Michael is working on his next creation in the kitchen nearby, and we’re listening to music together on the stereo. Our couch is in front of a beautiful picture window, and I’m watching snow falling outside.
At any other time, this would be my heaven. I love snow and the crisp clean white it covers everything with. I am fortunate to be able to enjoy all of the beauty and excitement of snow while avoiding all of the downsides. My hip and back injuries prevent me from being able to shovel, so Steven Michael takes care of the driveway. I work from home, so I don’t have to navigate treacherous driving conditions for my commute. Plus, being a December baby, snow means my birthday and Christmas are in sight!
However, Mother Nature is just messing with Western New York at this point. After a long winter, she sent us a week of legitimate Spring weather. She sprinkled a few days close to 70 degrees in, getting us excited to spend the weekend outside soaking in the sunshine. NOPE. Saturday morning brought us back down into the 20s and 30s as the day went on, and today we have snow. If I’m being completely honest, this doesn’t bother me. I’m content here in my spot on the couch, but I recognize that Ellis is going a little stir crazy and some time in the sun is helpful for everyone.
Speaking of feeling cozy and content, there is nothing more comforting than the smell of something delicious baking filling the house. Last night, as we were winding down for the day, Steven Michael whipped up some Banana Bread and set it to cool as we tucked Ellis in for the night. As I’m not a huge fan of bananas, it has always surprised me how much I love Banana Bread. Bread is really a misleading name for it, it’s more like cake. Toddler tip, if you call anything “cake” a picky eater will try it. Ellis asked for “banana cake” right away – sucker!
I have no doubt that you will all enjoy Steven Michael’s take on Banana Bread. It’s sweet, moist and soft, with a sugary crust coating the top (for real, it’s basically cake). The added bonus of yummy smells is just icing on that cake. Last night, we all fell asleep with the scent of freshly baked goodness filling our noses, a true joy that I wish for all of you!
